Pittsburgh Public Schools
341 S Bellefield Ave, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania 15213
THIS MONTH, the Pittsburgh Public School Board will vote on changes to the Student Code of Conduct. We need YOU to let the School Board know that they must vote YES for SUPPORTS, RESOURCES, and a BAN on suspensions from PreK-5th grade for non-violent misconduct NOW!
To sign up to speak, you must call the Board (412) 529-3868.
Call between 9:00 and 4:00 from Monday 6/12 through Friday 6/16. Last chance to call is the day of the hearing (Monday 6/19) BEFORE NOON.
Pittsburgh Public Schools must end suspensions for 5th Grade and below for minor non-violent misconduct beginning in the 2017-18 school year. Had this policy been implemented during the 2015-16 school year, our youngest students would have been spared nearly 1,900 days of missed instruction for minor misconduct — the equivalent of nearly 10 YEARS of school. Our children can't wait! #WeChoose Zero Tolerance for Inequality!
Parents, teachers, and leaders in PPS have a common goal- to support the academic development and personal growth of young people. Educators work on a daily basis to build upon student strengths and address challenges, and we know how demanding their jobs can be. Both students and educators must be supported in the effort to create Solutions, Not Suspensions for young people in Pittsburgh.
We call on the PPS Board of Education to:
* Ban out-of-school suspension in PreK-5th grade for minor misconduct in the 2017-18 school year
* Provide effective support and resources for school staff
* Revise Student Code of Conduct to eliminate language that allows for racial, gender, and disability bias
* Ensure transparency of discipline data
* Implement a District School Climate Advisory Board
* Create and support school-based Community Schools Teams
Come to the RALLY (outisde at 5pm) and PUBLIC HEARING (inside at 6pm)! Tell the School Board your ideas for the POSITIVE approaches and ALTERNATIVES to suspensions you want to see in your school. Help design the SOLUTIONS that ensure EQUITY and INCLUSION and keep students in the classroom.
SIGN and SHARE the petition too! actionnetwork.org/petitions/rethink-discipline
