Why we are doing the event?

It has been a tough couple of months for the Hispanic communities around the world. Starting off with Hurricane Harvey, then Hurricanes Irma, Katia, and Jose, closely followed by the horrible earthquakes in Mexico and now Hurricane Maria. Images of the destruction of complete cities, people in despair, many injured and too many lives lost have taken over the news and social media. Amongst all of this chaos there is one thing that stands out and shines a bright light in such dark times: the power of the Latino community coming together to help our brothers and sisters in times of need.

Videos have emerged of human chains being formed to pull people out of water streams in what used to be the sidewalk to the park, groups of people gathered in silence around what was once a school trying to hear the sound of hope that there was life under the rubble, and tons of provisions that had been donated from people across the world ready to be shipped out to ground zero. It is hard to put into words how inspiring these images are in times like these, but it is even harder to describe how impotent it makes Latinos across the world to know we can’t be helping out in person when we are needed most.

This is why a group of students from Carnegie Mellon University and The University of Pittsburgh decided to step up and do something about it. We decided to organize a fundraiser for the Pittsburgh community to get together and help out our brothers and sisters in need by doing what we do best: party. It is time to celebrate how great our community is, how our sense of humor is always there to pick us up, and how in times of need we can always depend on each other.

Event details are in the summary above. If you have any additional questions, feel free to message us and we will get back to you as soon as possible. We hope to see you there!
