John Edgar Wideman grew up in Pittsburgh, and has drawn on that experience in a number of critically acclaimed books, including Brothers and Keepers, Fatheralong, Hoop Roots, and many other novels and stories. He is a MacArthur Fellow and a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters; he has won the PEN/Faulkner Award twice and has been a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award and the National Book Award.
