Mettā: A Healing Arts Community
5118 Penn Ave., Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania 15224
In this 2-hour, mixed level workshop dance artist, Maree ReMalia, guides people across identities, backgrounds, and body types through movement explorations in a playful and exploratory atmosphere. No previous training is necessary. Each student moves in a way that accommodates their bodies needs and engages the senses while building flexibility, stamina, and strength. Participants move, sweat, laugh, witness, and listen while experimenting with the range of their physicality. The class moves to eclectic playlists, self made sound, or in silence. To create a less self conscious environment, the class works without mirrors and does not allow outside observers.
The workshop begins with a class in Ohad Naharin’s Gaga movement language, which originates from the belief in the healing, dynamic, ever-changing power of movement. Following, participants are guided through improvisational structures drawing from a variety of somatic, dance, and theater-based methods that encourage self discovery and building community. Participants may engage in reflective writing and drawing. For ages 16+.
