Thu 3/1, Beginning Contemporary Embroidery with all supplies & kit, 6:30-9:30pm
Generally, “contemporary embroidery” refers to non-traditional or non-conventional stitches, techniques, subject matter and/or application—a sort of “no rules” approach to this long-standing craft.
In this beginning embroidery class, you will learn basic techniques for hand embroidery, including 4 different stitches (satin stitch, split stitch, chain stitch, back stitch), how to transfer an image, prep your hoop and different finishing techniques. The class will use an original Southwest inspired pattern designed by Nora Schuchat (of Sol Y Mano Studio); by choosing your own thread colors and stitches, each student’s work will be completely unique! Modifications to the pattern design are encouraged for more advanced or adventurous students. You will leave class with a small stitch sampler, an in-progress embroidery piece to finish at home (including necessary materials) and a reference guide (just in case you forget anything). You’ll have the knowledge to complete your piece and dive into making your own embroidery work—whether it’s another piece of wall art or embellishing your favorite denim jacket!
Nora Schuchat is the textile artist + painter behind Sol Y Mano Studio (“Sun and Hand Studio”). Originally from Colorado, Nora brings the spirit of the American Southwest to Pittsburgh with her work. She is a self-taught embroiderer with a background in painting and sculpture. After years working as a Display Artist for Anthropologie, Nora is now focused on her own art and empowering others to find their creative passions.
