Mon 4/16, Toolshop: Intro to Tools, Wood & Being Your Own Handyman/Handyma'am, 6:30-9:30pm
In this starter class, we introduce you to tools, both hand & power. We designed this class as a starter class for any of our wood classes, to learn proper safety, how to do a few simple things around the house or navigating Home Depot & woods. We know that shit can be intimidating, there are hundreds, if not thousands, of tools out there and not everyone is instinctively Tim the Toolman Taylor.
In our Toolshop class, we will tour the shop going through the basic tools everyone needs to be their own home handyman or just to be able to hang pictures, turn off a leaky pipe and put a doorknob back on. Class will cover basic hand tools including alan wrenches (hello Ikea furniture) and screwdrivers. How to use a power drill & bits and review when to use what type of hardware (including nails, various screws & anchors). We show you how to measure properly; we review buying wood, the different types of wood & just navigating the lumber aisle. You will learn to cut with a handsaw & miter box, get a tour of power saws (jigsaws, miter, chop & table saws) and learn about the various types of sanders and sandpaper grits. Most importantly we do a thorough safety review of everything.
Class will cover common household tips including how to hang pictures properly, using anchors for support, how to strengthen/ better assemble cheap furniture. There will be a Q&A session at the end of class and you will take home a great informational zine for a resource at home. This class will be more informative with a lot of demos, some hands on work and students will make a wall mount beer opener OR small storage rack with hooks to get some hands on time.
