Sat 6/23, Sewing 102: Intro to alterations, hems & reworking your wardrobe, 10-2pm

Ready to take control of your wardrobe? Tackle that sewing pile? Re work all that great vintage you've been holding onto? This introduction to alterations for intermediate stitchers will cover fitting, marking, and sewing techniques for approaching hems, tapers, darts and more. Bring along 3-4 alteration projects from home (variety of projects) and we'll tackle topstitch and blind hems, reshaping techniques, and conversion ideas for re-purposing and upcycling (pants to shorts, long sleeve to short sleeves, etc). This class welcomes, respects, and celebrates all bodies and gender identities.

Though you won't tackle every project you bring, it will give you the option in class of working 2-3- whatever time & your skill allows. Class is priced for a smaller class size so that you can get personalized attention from the teacher.

Supplies Needed: Bring projects that include hemming, taking things in, pants to shorts, etc (see above list). If not sure what to bring, just email us. We use a Janome 2212. Please do not bring your own machine.

Pre-requisite: You do need to know how to sew and feel comfortable on one of our machines. We recommend taking a Sewing 101 or Bootcamp first, then diving in to this class.

Teacher Bio: Jenn Gooch is wandering Texan living in the region for more than 10 years. Her work includes art (fiber, sculpture, performance, video), crafts (weaving, sewing, quilting, embroidery, basketry), and music (fiddle, flatfoot dance, guitar, piano, and vocals). Her business, WERK, started as a textiles/tailoring studio and retail space, then became a private textile studio concentrating on design and fabrication with clients including Deep Local, VIA, the Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh, 20th Century Fox (Fault in Our Stars), and Quantum Theater (costume designer). Jenn recently relocated to the Ohio Valley region, 70 miles outside of Pittsburgh, to start a food and fiber farm with her partner.

The rules: Classes are for adults only, unless you email in to request permission. To cancel, move or change classes we do require a 72 hour cancellation or change in order to get a refund or move classes. Once past the 72 hour point, we have already locked in your space with the Teacher and supplies, which will be paid out to the Teacher no matter what. If you are using a gift certificate, or have any concerns, email us at [email protected], thanks! All classes take place at Workshop PGH at 5135 Penn Avenue in Garfield. Parking is metered until 6pm and is free on Sundays. For open parking, we recommend Coral St, Evaline St. or Winebiddle St. nearby. Feel free to BYO snacks and refreshments. On weekends we have Pigeon Bagel & coffee pop up from 9am — 1pm! See you soon!
