“The Wall That Heals” Vietnam Veterans Memorial Replica and Mobile Education Center, sponsored nationally by the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund, shares the healing legacy of the Wall and educates the public on the impact of the Vietnam War.

The McKeesport Allied Veterans Memorial Organization (MAVMO), a committee of volunteers as well as city, state, and federal officials, is responsible for bringing this scaled-down mobile exhibit to Jimmy Long Field in McKeesport’s Renziehausen Park. Admission is free, and the display will be open to the public around the clock from August 9 through 12, 2018. An opening ceremony is planned for August 9 at 9 a.m., and a closing ceremony is planned for August 12 at 10 a.m.

The City of McKeesport and the McKeesport Area School District have strong ties to the Vietnam War – having lost a total of 24 young men with ties to the City during that conflict. For many years, the LaRosa Boys & Girls Club has honored 11 members who made the ultimate sacrifice in Vietnam with a monument on the club’s Ravine Street grounds. It is said to be one of the first Vietnam memorials in the state of Pennsylvania and across the nation. Separately, McKeesport Area High School recently became home to a memorial recognizing 23 students, known as the “McKeesport 23,” who were killed in Vietnam. Ten names appear in both locations.

We enjoyed the Wall very much. But I cannot say that about the assistance to handicap people. A Veteran using a walker was so upset on seeing how far he had to walk to the Wall. One of the gentleman volunteers asked a girl on a golf cart to drive him up. He was so happy. They got about 50 feet before an older man in a white cowboy hat stopped her and made him get out — he said no golf carts on the grass. What did he think all the people visiting this w/e were going to do to it? Additionally, there was only 1 bench in the field — no where else to sit. I, myself, walk with a knee brace and had to stop several times to get back — not to mention the heat and no shade. Love The Wall, disappointed with Renziehausen Park.
